 Short History

The Holy Virgin Protection, Holy Saints Cosmas and Damian, the Unmercenary Physicians Titan Church was founded in 2001 with the blessing of His Beatitude Teoctist, the Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church. In this respect, according to the 276 resolution dated June 19, 2001, emitted by Bucharest Archdiocese, Parish Priest Mihai Stavara was invested to obtain both the terrain and the Church documentation. A 2,800 sq. m. land within the build-up area was given in free use, owing to the benevolence of both the Town Hall of Bucharest and the 3-rd district mayor. The terrain is situated at 2, Prisaca Dornei street, in conformity with the HCM PB 135 / May 18, 2001 act. Having the whole Church documentation and the blessing of His Beatitude, the Parish Priest Mihai Stavara assured a good start of this new born Parish by insistent prayers and worship services. For the beginning, these were kept in a temporary Church located in a couple of military tents offered by the Ministry of Defense. So, our tent prayer Church is at the cross of the Nicolae Grigorescu Blvd. and Prisaca Dornei st., on the left side of the Titan Polyclinic. As a result, the group of buildings placed in the neighborhood of the Titanii park and the Polyclinic constituted the geographical limits of our Parish. Alin Negoescu, the Architect, and Radu Stefanescu, the Engineer, began the implementation of the new Church execution project on May 21, 2002. On August 29, 2002, His Beatitude Teoctist, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, His Eminence Teodosie, Archbishop of Tomis, His Grace Sebastian, Patriarchal Vicar Bishop, a lot of priests and deacons came with great joy in the new Parish. This date coincides with the feast of John the Baptist's Beheading day. They were welcomed by the parishioners led by Parish Priest Mihai Stavara and Mr Eugen Plesca, the district Mayor at that period. This worship service was dedicated to the laying of the foundation stone to the new building of the Holy Virgin Protection and Holy Wonderworking Unmercenary Physicians Cosmas and Damian Church. All these years, the parishioners have participated with sustained prayers and donations for raising the new Church in Titan's area, in God's praise and Christian believers' joy. On March of 10-th 2006, when the Ministry of Defense took back their military tents, the religious worship continued in the new unfinished but covered edifice. In the same year, two new annexes were built. The former has three rooms, one named 'pangar', the other one serving as a room of the candles, and the last one, as a funeral chapel. The latter annexe serves as trapeza / refectory (not completely finished) and as an office too. Owing to the benevolence of the district Mayor, Mr Liviu Negoita, who visited our Church occasionally, other 500 sq. m., were given to our Church as an extension of the land within the build-up area that we already had. In March 2007, our Parish received a new Minister of the Saint Altar in the person of Deacon Mina - Emilian Stavara, Parish Priest Mihai Stavara's son. He was ordained by His Eminence Varsanufie Prahoveanu, Vicar Bishop of the Bucharest Archbishop. Our Church is carrying on the social mission, offering a special attention to the elderly, single persons, who have special problems. Warm meals at the trapeza Church are offered to some of them. We organize special visits to the elders' places offering food packages with the help of our volunteers, some of them being pupils belonging to the two schools situated in our Parish. They are carried out both with the parents' and teachers' permission, of course. This practice has become traditional both at the Nativity or Resurrection of Christ and at our Church Feasts Our Parish collaborates with two schools Federico Garcia Lorca (no. 196) and no. 200. Both the Parish Priest and the Deacon take part in every school celebration day. We bless the beginning of every school year with the sacred service of the 'Aghiasma'. Our Church happily hosted the ceremonial of the pupils' prize awards. The Church also hosted exhibitions of religious icons, religious ceramics, religious music choirs. The participation implied many other schools in Bucharest, not only the two schools situated in our Parish. The participants were Olympic pupils, winners of different competitions based on the school subject named 'religious studies'. On other occasions like Nativity and Resurrection of Christ, our Church resounded with religious music of "Harisma" and "Divina Armonie" choirs reminding believers of heavenly harmonies. The Church building has the following dimensions: 38 m in length, 18 m in width, and 28 m in height. The Iconostasis is sculpted in oak-wood by Mr Marian Mircea, a religious master from Alba-Iulia. Some mosaics representing icons of the Church Feasts have been applied on the frontal outside wall of the Church together with those of Michael and Gabriel Archangels, Saint Peter, and Saint Pavel. The work was achieved by Art Georgies, a specialized firm from Iassy. At present, the religious services are celebrated in the new Church building, obeying the liturgical and pastoral guidance of the Eparchial Center. We started the inside walls painting. Both the clergy and our parishioners expect with great joy the sanctification of this establishment In this respect, at each holy worship service we ask for the help, the power, and the hope from God, to fulfill the holy thought laid at the foundation of this Holy Establishment.
